You do not have to own a fleet in order to use vehicle tracking systems.  Anyone can benefit from the vehicle tracking devices on the market.  On this website we have already looked at the types of vehicle tracking devices, so we can now concentrate on how to use personal devices.

Most GPS tracking systems have an internet software programme that allows you to connect.  If you are using the system for a company fleet you have access to the tracking data 24 hours a day.  You can get up to the minute reports on where the vehicles are, if they are moving, and how fast they are moving.  Even if you are not in a company you can use the system to get the same information.

Let’s take a look at a few examples:

  • You have a teenager.  You know that they are lying to you and you suspect something wrong is happening.  So, you install a GPS device.  You can use this tracker on the vehicle to determine where your child goes, whether they are speeding, and what places they may stop.
  • Your vehicle is stolen.  Previously you installed a GPS tracking system.  Luckily the thief did not have a jammer for the signal.  You know each turn the thief is taking.  You can call the police and give an accurate location of the vehicle, and they can then follow the car.

No matter what you need the tracking device for in a personal situation you will be able to use it.  You do not have to just keep track if an employee is on the job or running a personal errand.  You can keep track of your investment.

You will need to install the device.  You have a couple of options regarding the GPS vehicle tracking.  The device can be placed under the hood or outside the vehicle so that it is out of sight.  You could install a GPS system that is part of a navigation option. In this way you use the GPS to give you directions while driving.

To track a vehicle you go online to the company site for the device you have and log into the account.  Your vehicle will be assigned a name, number or other symbol to distinguish it from others.  You can then click find and get real time data.

Any reports that you want on the driver of the vehicle can then be accessed.  If you share your vehicle with your teenager you can get reports on where they went.  There are also alert options.  The alerts can be sent via text message or email.  If you do not need the alert you can turn it off or delete the message.  Otherwise you are alerted to an issue with the vehicle.

It is also possible to create a route for the driver.  This goes back to navigation.  If you have a navigation and messaging centre as part of the device you are able to set it up for other drivers.
